We're kicking off 2025 with an exciting twist for Unknown Planet! For the first time, we're revealing the title ahead of the screening: Join us for a special presentation of Take Out, the rarely-seen-in-theaters gem co-directed by Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou. The screening will include a special pre-recorded video introduction by Sean Baker before the film.
This screening is a celebration of the dynamic creative partnership between Baker and Tsou. While Baker has gone on to direct acclaimed films like Tangerine and The Florida Project, Tsou has been an integral collaborator, producing many of his works (Anora being the exception). Together, they have crafted films that are raw, deeply human, and unforgettable.
With Baker’s latest film, Anora, recently winning the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and emerging as a major awards season contender, this is the perfect opportunity to revisit Take Out. This early work highlights the remarkable synergy between Baker and Tsou that continues to shape their groundbreaking careers.
The American dream has rarely seemed so far away as in Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou’s raw, vérité Take Out, an immersion in the life of an undocumented Chinese immigrant struggling to get by on the margins of post-9/11 New York City. Facing violent retaliation from a loan shark, restaurant deliveryman Ming Ding has until nightfall to pay back the money he owes, and he encounters both crushing setbacks and moments of unexpected humanity as he races against time to earn enough in tips over the course of a frantic day. From this simple setup, Baker and Tsou fashion a kind of neorealist survival thriller of the everyday, shedding compassionate light on the too often overlooked lives and labor that keep New York running.
