Industrial Strength is a mixed media series by artist Claire Marcus that explores the sculptural forms and industrial history of the Lehigh Valley and neighboring coal country
CLAIRE MARCUS has a special interest in landscape’s power to evoke narrative. Her mixed media work and artist’s books include printmaking, photography, papermaking, and textile techniques.
She has exhibited with ArtsQuest; Centre for Print Research; Cincinnati Book Arts Society; Frontline Arts; Glasgow Gallery of Photography; Kolaj Institute; Kalamazoo Book Arts Center; Minnesota Center for Book Arts; Philadelphia Center for the Book; Philadelphia Print Consortium; Printmakers Society of the Lehigh Valley; San Francisco Center for the Book; and World Book Night/UWE Bristol.
Claire holds a BA in architecture and an MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied with MacArthur Fellow Rackstraw Downes, sculptor Robert Engman, and photographer Rudy Burckhardt. A fifth-generation fiber artist, she is studying textile embellishment with Hand & Lock London.
Claire Marcus has conducted residencies for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts since 1998 and was a Resident Artist at the Banana Factory from its opening until 2003. She received a Lackawanna County Arts grant for her RAILROAD PERSPECTIVES project at Steamtown.
Claire serves on the boards of ACE: Arts Community of Easton, Cincinnati Book Arts Society, and Printmakers Society of the Lehigh Valley. See Claire’s newest work at @clairebmarcusart on Instagram
