ARTSQUEST’S LGBTQ+ FILM SERIES RETURNS WITH 1985 FILM ‘BUDDIES’

Still frame from the film ‘Buddies’

The LGBTQ+ Film Series returns Sun., Dec. 5 with a free screening of ‘Buddies’ followed by a pre-recorded interview with The Bressan Project creator Roe Bressan

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – ArtsQuest’s Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas (FBAC) will feature this year’s third instalment of its LGBTQ+ Film Series at 6 p.m. on Sun., Dec 5. with the 1985 film “Buddies.” A pre-recorded Q&A with writer/director Arthur Bressan Jr.’s sister and creator of The Bressan Project, Roe Bressan, will follow the screening. Tickets are free and can be reserved at steelstacks.org/film or by calling the ArtsQuest Box Office at 610.332.3378.

“I remember seeing ‘Buddies’ when it was released in 1985,” said series co-curator Catherine Ford. “Buddies truly captures the essence of HIV and AIDS experience both from an emotional and historical perspective with moving performances.” Ford, who serves as a Cinema Committee member and ArtsQuest Ambassador, called the film groundbreaking. “We are so fortunate to include ‘Buddies’ in our LGBTQ+ Film Series.”

“Buddies,” written and directed by Arthur J. Bressan Jr., was the first feature-length drama about AIDS. Staring Geoff Edholm and David Schachter, the film begins with 25-year-old David (Schachter) volunteering to be a “buddy” to an AIDS patient Robert (Edholm), a 32-year-old gay activist from California who has been abandoned by his friends and lovers and unfolds entirely within Robert’s Manhattan hospital room. In the simplicity of the story and the elegance of its telling, Bressan and ‘Buddies’ achieve a rare perfection. It’s a timeless portrayal of an entire era in gay history.

“It is not a Hollywood blockbuster, but in its day, ‘Buddies’ was an urgent call to action,” said Roe Bressan.

“Buddies” had its world premiere in September 1985 at San Francisco’s Castro Theater, five days later President Reagan finally mentioned the word “AIDS” publicly for the first time. While the film took less than a month to create, it has had a lasting impact long after Bressan’s passing in the summer of 1987 when he was only 44-years old.

“Artie didn’t know he had AIDS when he made ‘Buddies’ but after watching so many of his friends suffer and die from AIDS, he felt something had to be said-something had to be done. There was little information, no clinics, no support groups and the GMHC was just a fledging organization,” she said. “So, I will ask this audience to look kindly on this film passed it blemishes to see the fury and the anguish and the desperation and the love that fueled it.”

The LGBTQ+Film Series, curated by Catherine Ford, Alessandra Fanelli and Adrianna Gober, aims to explore and uplift a wide and diverse scope of LGBTQ+ issues and stories by highlighting selections from the rich, enduring history of queer cinema. The series will showcase comedies, dramas, documentaries, mainstream and independent as well as international films both new and old, spotlighting queer filmmakers, screenwriters, actors and themes. This year’s LGBTQ+ Film Series has previously featured “Swan Song” and “But I’m a Cheerleader.”

Tickets are free and can be reserved at steelstacks.org/film or by calling the ArtsQuest Box Office at 610.332.3378. The next film in the series will be shown in January, title and full details will be announced soon. ArtsQuest will continue to follow the latest CDC, state and local health and safety guidelines. Visit artsquest.org/safety for more information.

Five Minutes with Annette Szygiel, Executive Vice President & Chief Experience Officer at Univest Financial Corporation

ckm21_univestsocial

The team at Univest Financial takes great pride in being involved Christkindlmarkt & the community. Here’s what Annette Szygiel, Executive Vice President & Chief Experience Officer for Univest Financial Corporation, had to say about why an event like Christkindlmarkt is so important to our community.

1. Univest Financial has been a supporter of Christkindlmarkt for the past 4 years. What drove your decision to support this event?

Univest Financial is excited to again serve as presenting sponsor of Christkindlmarkt. While we all continue to navigate uncertainty caused by the pandemic, Univest Financial remains dedicated to supporting the local communities we serve. Christkindlmarkt provides a great opportunity to support local artisans and small businesses at a time they need it more than ever. Univest has financial centers in Bethlehem and Allentown as well as a regional office in Berks County so this partnership is also a great way for us to reinforce our presence in this region while demonstrating our commitment to local communities in which we operate.

2. Are you surprised with how much the event has grown?

ArtsQuest is truly dedicated to bringing the community together in support of the arts in the Lehigh Valley, so it is no surprise how much Christkindlmarkt has grown over the years. This growth proves that Christkindlmarkt is a favorite Christmas City tradition for families. Univest is always looking for partnerships that bring families together to enjoy the arts and culture of our local region so the partnership has been a great fit.

3. What is your favorite part of Christkindlmarkt?

My husband is a painter and we both love art so we enjoy exploring the many artisan works that can be found at Christkindlmarkt. We enjoy getting into the holiday spirit while supporting local vendors. I also love that members of the Univest Family volunteer at Christkindlmarkt – that is a truly important aspect of our partnership. Univest strives to be a part of the communities we serve. It isn’t just about writing a check and offering financial support. Our Committed to Local philanthropic program is also about volunteering time to help local nonprofits. Volunteering at Christkindlmarkt allows our employees to share their time and talents while building relationships with other employees, interacting with members of the community and supporting ArtsQuest.

4. What is new at Univest Financial?

In June, we celebrated Univest’s 145th anniversary. As we reflect on our history, we are grateful to have the opportunity to continue to serve our customers, communities, shareholders and employees. It is thanks to the hard work and dedication of more than 900 members of the Univest Family that we continue to move the Corporation forward. We continue to support our customers and communities as they navigate the ongoing challenges presented by the pandemic and remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting local communities. In 2020, we donated more than $1.9 million to the communities we serve and we are on track to do the same this year. Continuing to make these investments during uncertain and vulnerable times is a testament to our corporate values and dedication to our Committed To Local philanthropic program.

5. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Being of Dutch Indonesian descent, a favorite tradition is enjoying Spekkoek, a layered butter cake that blends cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cardamom into the batter. It’s delicious as dessert with coffee and again Christmas morning with tea. While this special dessert is a favorite tradition, what I truly enjoy most is celebrating the spirit of the season together with family and friends.

Visit Christkindlmarkt presented by Univest Financial Nov. 19-21, 26-28 & Dec. 2-5, 9-12 & 16-19!

ARTSQUEST’S FRANK BANKO ALEHOUSE CINEMAS RELAUNCHES LATIN FILM SERIES

The “Cinema Significa…” bi-monthly series begins on Nov. 13 with free a screening and live musical performance

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – ArtsQuest’s Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas (FBAC) will restart its “Cinema Significa…” Hispanic and Latin Film Series on Sat., Nov 13 at 12 p.m. with a screening of the 1998 film “Dance with Me.” The Lehigh Valley Urban Latin Orquesta will open the event with a live performance. Tickets are free and can be reserved at steelstacks.org/film or by calling the ArtsQuest Box Office at 610.332.3378.

“Cinema Significa…” was started in late 2019 with two sold-out screenings held before the pandemic shut the cinemas down. The series is now curated by ArtsQuest Cinema Committee member Alessandra Fanelli, an arts administrator and digital content creator based in Allentown. She also serves as a co-curator of the FBAC’s LGBTQ+ Film Series.

“’Dance With Me’ shows that there are two types of people: those who know how to live and those who merely breathe on a daily basis, and what separates them is simple: a love for dancing,” Fanelli said. “Coming on the heels of ‘Dirty Dancing’, ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Zorba the Greek’, ‘Dance with Me’ turned rhythm into soul and took things to the next level by setting the dance-fueled romance fantasy to a Latin beat.”

The film features Latin pop star Chayanne, who has released 21 albums and sold more than 50 million records over his storied career. “Dance With Me” also stars Vanessa Williams and Kris Kristofferson and was nominated for three American Latino Media Arts Awards (the ALMAs) in 1999.

“Cinema Significa…” strives to celebrate Hispanic and Latin stories and expand intercultural knowledge through dance, musical performances, movie screenings, Q&A panel sessions and other educational components resulting from community partners.

Fanelli said she has partnered with the Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley (HCLV) to assist in curating this series in an effort to expand intercultural knowledge. Throughout the series, representatives from the HCLV will be present to discuss services they provide.

“’Dance with Me’ represents some of the diverse identities Cinema Significa strives to amplify,” Fanelli said. “It’s fun, colorful, and highlights Latin night clubbing as a passionate symbol for life; it’s exactly how I want us restarting this series,” Fanelli said.

6 Films to Celebrate NOIRVEMBER!

48-noirvember

The Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas, inspired by the annual, social media-based celebration of the same name started by film critic Marya E. Gates in 2010, are spending November with cinema’s most hardboiled detectives, seedy cityscapes, and enough low-key lighting to make anyone a suspect.

We have a little bit about each film in Noirvember, curated by ArtsQuest Cinema Committee member Adrianna Gober, below. As to why we’re delving into these twisted, shadowy worlds, well, we’ll let Adrianna tell you: “Film noir is foundational. Its distinct visual style, narrative conventions and character archetypes, and tendency toward lurid twists and turns have endured through decades of cinema, influencing countless filmmakers and films across a diverse span of genres. However, this might not be obvious to every filmgoer. This series aims to honor the tremendous legacy of film noir and just how thrilling, inventive, and jaw-droppingly shocking classic American film noir could be, featuring a selection of deeply influential films guaranteed to excite hardcore noir fans and genre newcomers alike.”

The Maltese Falcon

Wednesday, November 3 (7:30pm)

When one hears that the star of a movie had to provide his own wardrobe and came up with some of his own lines, one doesn’t automatically think American cinema classic. But those are Humphrey Bogart’s own clothes and, inspired by a passage in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the actor suggested the seminal line “the stuff that dreams are made of”. Kicking off Noirvember with The Maltese Falcon feels like the right move considering that protagonist Sam Spade, first conceived by writer Dashiell Hammett in 1930, is widely cited as a crystalizing figure in the development of the private detective character that came to dominate American film noir.

Kiss Me Deadly

Sunday, November 7 (6:30pm)

How do you go wrong with a film singled out by a 1955 federal commission as that year’s number one menace to American youth? Arguably the most hard-boiled of the detectives in Noirvember, Mike Hammer – the creation of the legendary Mickey Spillane – smashes through the buttoned-up social norms of the 1950s and right into one of the wildest film endings on record.

Double Indemnity

Wednesday, November 10 (7:30pm)

A film that has regularly appeared on the American Film Institute’s best American films list, Double Indemnity was also considered by Billy Wilder to be the best film the revered director ever made. The film’s look, conceived by Wilder and cinematographer John F. Seitz, drew on Wilder’s roots in German expressionism and set a palette for noir that gave it its grit and mystery.

Gun Crazy

Sunday, November 14 (6:30pm)

Now here we have a film that employed Al J. Jennings as a technical adviser. Why is that significant? Well, this is a film with a 17-page bank robbery sequence and Jennings, 85 at the time, used to rob banks in the Old West. See you there.

Detour

Wednesday, November 17

The first “B” movie chosen by the Library of Congress for its National Film Registry, Detour’s legend continues to grow after coming out of Hollywood’s Poverty Row in 1945. Noted critic Richard Corliss ranked the film’s antagonist at #6 on his 2007 “25 Greatest Villains” list, saying simply: “Hell truly is other people – if the person is Vera”.

The Naked City

Sunday, November 21 (6:30pm)

Don’t know this one? Believe it or not, The Naked City is the only Noirvember film to win at the Oscars (Double Indemnity lost all 7 it was nominated for). Winning for Best Cinematography and Best Editing, The Naked City’s visual style was inspired by New York photographer Arthur ‘Weegee’ Fellig, who published a book of photographs detailing early 1940s New York life titled Naked City. Some argue that Italian neorealism played more of a part in the cinematography but, either way, The Naked City needs to be seen on the big screen and you now have that opportunity.

See you during NOIRVEMBER at the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas!
