ARTSQUEST TO HOST ‘TIME TO REMEMBER’ MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION AT LEVITT PAVILION STEELSTACKS

our-hometown-heroes1

Ceremony to take place on May 31, in-person and via livestream

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In honor of our nation’s bravest heroes, ArtsQuest and Embassy Bank will host the “Time to Remember” Memorial Day Celebration on Mon., May 31 at 3 p.m., on the Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks stage, presented by Coordinated Health, now part of Lehigh Valley Health Network. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and free reservations can be made at steelstacks.org.

The “Time to Remember” Memorial Day Celebration will feature Kendal Conrad singing the National Anthem and God Bless America, Chris Poczak playing Taps on trumpet, and a reading by the Lehigh Valley Gold Star Mothers of the names of Lehigh Valley residents who have lost their lives in service to our nation. Speakers will include ArtsQuest President & CEO Kassie Hilgert and City of Bethlehem Council Member J. William Reynolds.

“ArtsQuest is honored to feature an array of programming throughout the year dedicated to commemorating the noble actions of our fallen heroes, including this ‘Time to Remember’ Memorial Day Celebration,” said ArtsQuest President & CEO Kassie Hilgert. “We thank Embassy Bank who continues to make it possible for us to honor those who’ve given it all for our nation. Please join us for this intimate celebration of bravery and freedom.”

Visitors can also view the 11th annual ‘Our Home Town Heroes’ display, presented by ArtsQuest and Embassy Bank, which honors those within our community who are either currently serving or who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. More than 140 banners, featuring over 1400 Lehigh Valley residents, will go on display starting Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31, and will stay up through July 4th.

Over the past 10 years, local servicemen and women from all branches of the military have been on display to honor our hometown heroes. Each banner displays not only photos and names, but the soldier’s rank, branch, dates of service and hometown.

“While Memorial Day kicks off the summer season for most of us – full of picnics, festivals and of course ceremonies – it is also a day of remembrance, dedicated to honoring our servicemen and women who gave themselves selflessly for our freedom,” said Embassy Bank President, Chief Executive Officer & Chairman Dave Lobach.

“After some of the most trying times our nation has experienced in recent history, I am so glad we can get together once again for the powerful tradition of honoring our military, especially those who have lost their lives protecting and serving the United States of America.”

If you’d prefer to enjoy the “Time to Remember” Memorial Day Celebration from your own home, watch the livestream on our SteelStacks Facebook page.

5 Videos That Prove Tommy Emmanuel is a Certified Guitar Player

By Jake Cohen, ArtsQuest Marketing Intern

Tommy Emmanuel is rocking outdoors at the Steel Stacks presented by T-Mobile on May 20, and there are tons of reasons to see him do what he does best.

For one, he’s an Aussie! Born in 1955 in Australia, Emmanuel first became interested in music at the age of four when his engineer father brought home an electric guitar to see how it worked.

Second, his music is guaranteed to make you happy! When fans speak of his music, there are two main qualities that they mention. Other than the fact that his guitar playing is predictably extraordinary, fans always speak about the joy that his Emmanuel’s music brings them. Not quite sure what we mean? Well check out some of these clips of Tommy Emmanuel bringing joy to the world – and making it look easy!

Get Your Lawn Square or Table

“Classical Gas”

I hope your browser can watch this one at .25x speed, because Emmanuel almost breaks the sounds barrier with this one! It’s amazing how many notes he can squeeze into each second – they don’t teach you THAT in music class! “Classical Gas?” No, Tommy is running on butane!

“Keep It Simple”

“Keep It Simple.” Even the concept is heartwarming. Not only does Emmanuel plays this piece masterfully, but he also looks so passionate about the song. You can see how he plucks each chord not only with his fingers, but with his entire body, heart and soul.  I feel like I could listen to this one on repeat until his show next month, but we have more clips to look at.

Song For A Rainy Day

Is there ever a more appropriate time for a certified guitarist to bring you joy than on a rainy day? Each chord here feels so purposeful and meaningful, and that just goes to show how great Emmanuel is. Rain, rain, go away, Tommy has more songs to play!

Cover of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”

Yes, you’ve heard “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” before, but never quite like this! Showcasing what a lifetime dedication to an instrument looks like, Emmanuel crushes this classic with his own unique rendition.

“Beatles Medley”

That’s right – Emmanuel is even amazing live! His stage presence is so overpowering and he truly looks like he’s in his element. Watch as he treats his guitar like an extension of his body and has the whole crows involved in this performance. He certainly does the Beatles justice in this medley.

Well there you have it – just five of many examples of Tommy Emmanuel absolutely shredding the strings! He’ll be here on May 20 for a show that you won’t want to miss.

Pepperwine: ArtsQuest Discovery Series

discovery-series_635x412_pepperwine
By Kellie & Breece of Pepperwine & ArtsQuest Staff | Published 3/19/21

Congrats, you’ve found your way to the ArtsQuest Discovery Series! Our organization prides itself on introducing your ears to new bands and artists. So while the music touring industry is mostly on hold because of the pandemic, we’re giving some of our musician friends the chance to share what music they’re hyped about. A mix of up-and-comers, artists that inspire their craft, deep cuts, the classics…oh, and their own tunes!

In this edition, get to know the musical tastes of Pepperwine! The Musikfest veterans use voice, piano, synthesizer, guitar, bass, and percussion to create hip shaking-rhythms and head-nodding tunes. Their catalog of music effortlessly blends elements of soul, pop, R&B, funk, and rock with Leading Lady Kellie offering a powerful yet sultry vocal.

“Try” is an uplifting electric feel-good song with chill undertones featuring vocals, piano, synth, guitar, bass, and drums. The theme of this song is “just trying to get by – keeping our souls up high”… one day at a time. This song was released on March 1, 2021.

Discover Pepperwine: Website | Facebook | Instagram | Spotify | YouTube

Now that you’re in the groove, keep scrolling to discover these other rad musicians & bands, as chosen by Pepperwine!

Yebba

Yebba has power in her voice but it is also extremely smooth. Her songwriting is unique and different. She also has an ability to move about her range in a way that is very beautiful and skillful. Her song “Evergreen” caught me the first time I heard it.

Electric Kif

We have played with Electric Kif a few times in Asbury Park, NJ and they are ridiculously good at their craft and very nice guys. Their music varies and can be upbeat but also super powerful and dramatic.

Camille Trust

I first found Camille Trust through a cover she was doing of another vocalist’s song. Her music and style varies but one thing is consistent is and that is her beautiful and strong voice. She has also done some hilarious/thoughtfully planned live streams throughout our quarantine time. She is a new age pop soul star.

Dynamo

One time at a gig in NYC we were put on a bill with Dynamo. We were blown away by them and how many members they could fit on the tiny stage provided. It’s hard to pick a favorite song but something about “Something’s Gotta Give” is so good.

Cory Wong

Cory Wong deserves to be on our list simply for the sheer amount of fantastic musical content he has released since 2020 (not to mention the equally amazing music before). “Lilypad” is one of those newer songs, appearing on The Striped Album from 2020.

Jungle

Really enjoy these guys’ vibe and airy vocal flow. Jungle has several singers but somehow still sound like one voice. Their beats are uplifting and dancey and their music is good for many occasions… driving, working out, dancing, cooking whatever!

Octave Cat

Octave Cat is comprised of members of Lotus and Dopapod. They are instrumental electric synthy goodness. Their song “Metropolis” has so much energy and a gradual dynamic build that I’ve found myself punching the air by the time the song is over! I particularly enjoy this live version…

Hambone Relay

We couldn’t not include our friends in Hambone Relay! We met these guys about three years ago when we played Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg. They played before us and my jaw was on the floor. Since we have created a friendship and done some collaborations. Their instrumental discography is funky and so good. They are incredible musicians and really nice guys. Here is their song “Star Climber”…

Rett Madison

I discovered Rett Madison when she did a cover with the Scary Pockets, and then discovered her discography. She has an eclectic mix of music but there’s something about “Fleas” I especially love the build and vocal melody. Also, the irony of lyrics is great too.

Huntertones

I recently found Huntertones on a Spotify playlist. They were doing a cover with a vocalist. I thought “that instrumentation is really cool” and that led to my finding the song “Togo”…

Lemon City Trio

Lemon City Trio is an amazing instrumental trio. Their sound varies and they have a track for every mood. They recently put out some new music and one of the songs I enjoy most is “New Moon”. It is really relaxing and has multiple sections that cohesively flow really nicely.

Madwoman

Madwoman is a band out of Florida. I discovered them through the “original music” hashtag on instagram. Their music isn’t the easiest to find online but they post very frequently on Instagram. They are a bluesy soulful trio and the singer has a beautiful and interesting voice. I particularly like the clip of this song.

ARTSQUEST’S GREATER LEHIGH VALLEY FILMMAKER FESTIVAL SET FOR 10TH EDITION WITH ADJUSTED FORMAT

GLVFF 10th Annual_2021

BETHLEHEM, PA – After ten years of highlighting submitted films from the region’s moviemakers, ArtsQuest’s Greater Lehigh Valley Filmmaker Festival (GLVFF) is back for 2021 – specifically Mar. 31-Apr. 3 – with an adjusted online-only format set to celebrate some of the best films of the decade while also discussing the future of filmmaking. All GLVFF events are free of charge and will be produced via Zoom while simulcast on Facebook Live via the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas page; interested patrons can either register to be a part of an event’s Zoom call or watch via Facebook.

dannys-headshot-1-1 On Saturday, Apr. 3 at 1 p.m. actor/director Daniel Roebuck, a Bethlehem native, will sit down with GLVFF Director (and ArtsQuest Cinema Specialist) Anthony DeSanctis to discuss his career in movies, including his plan to make the Lehigh Valley a hub for filmmaking in the future. Roebuck, who made his directorial debut with the Lehigh Valley-shot “Getting Grace,” has just under 250 acting credits to his name in a career that has spanned five decades.

Later that same day – 3 p.m. on Apr. 3 – Emmaus native Stephanie Gardner will discuss her project “33 and Me,” an international television series wherein Gardner travels to different countries to engage with film directors who are also in their thirties, exploring their lives, careers and cultures. Gardner, now based in Taos, N.M., has written, directed and produced over twenty short films, including the 2015 GLVFF Best in Show winner “If I Had a Piano (I’d Play You the Blues).”

“We couldn’t ignore the fact that this year the GLVFF turns ten, so we wanted to do something special for the occasion,” said DeSanctis. “Panels and discussions are ideas we’ve toyed with for a few years now, so I’m very excited to introduce these new formats to the festival and will look into how we can keep them in for future editions. We are all hoping next year’s festival will be in-person and that we’ll be again accepting new submissions to exhibit in our theater as we know how much it means to filmmakers to see their work projected onto our big screen.”

Hoey and Fish: Born to Play the Blues

samanthafish-and-garyhoey_635x412

By Jake Cohen, ArtsQuest Marketing Intern

He’s a 5x Top 20 Billboard hit singer/songwriter from Lowell, MA, and she’s a guitarist responsible for the No. 1 album in her category in both ‘15 AND ‘17 from Kansas City, MO. What’s one thing that Gary Hoey and Samantha Fish have in common? They both love to rock the BLUES, and look damn good doing it! These two won’t get you down in your feels like other Blues artists, but will instead have you headbanging along as you get lost in the beat. With Hoey soon performing at the Musikfest Cafe presented by Yuengling and Fish making an appearance at the Highmark Blue Shield Community Stage on the Air Products Town Square, it’s a great time to start singing the Blues.

header-garyhoey-publicityphoto-copy

Gary Hoey will rock the house during his intimate solo show on March 13, and you can secure your socially-distanced table right here. Can’t wait until then? I don’t blame you. Here are some of my favorite Hoey jams:

To understand Hoey, we need to understand his early successes. In 1993, he released his album, Animal Instinct. Included was his cover of the wildly popular hit “Hocus Pocus” which climbed to the Top Five of the Billboard Hot 100 mainstream rock tracks. It’s cool to see just how far he’s come, and is even cooler to know that he was always this good.

You can’t talk about Hoey without appreciating what he did (and continues to do) for holiday music. His smash hits, the Ho! Ho! Hoey! Christmas CDs have been performed time and time again, and they never get old! They can be heard on radio shows each year, and even in some musical Hallmark cards! They’re sure to make you feel jolly!

Yes, Hoey is still putting out original music today! His most recent album, Neon Highway Blues just dropped in 2019, debuted at number two in the U.S. Billboard Blues Albums Chart. Not too shabby!

samantha-fish-a-570x570

Samantha Fish is making her way to the Highmark Blue Shield Community Stage on the Air Products Town Square on April 16 for a show that you won’t want to miss. Here is the link to pick up a socially-distances table. If the anticipation is killing you as much as it is me, then count down some of my favorites from Samantha Fish:

Fish’s third studio album release, Wild Heart is jam packed with some fiery songs including the namesake of the record: “Wild Heart.” Here, she showcases her dynamite vocals as she shreds the strings!

It’s pretty rare to hear Samantha Fish’s voice without her incendiary guitar riffs, but it’s a real treat. “Dream Girl” from her 2019 album, Kill or be Kind, showcases her beautiful, calming voice. The music video is pretty rad, too.

An oldie but a goodie! One of Fish’s older albums, Black Wind Howlin’ is bursting at the seams with some of her best solos. My favorite on this record is “Kick Around,” a song during which she shows why she is one of the best to ever do it.

Gary Hoey and Samantha Fish are two of the best Blues artists to grace Bethlehem with their music, and both of their upcoming performances are must-sees.

ARTSQUEST ADDS INDOOR & OUTDOOR SHOWS TO ITS APRIL/MAY LINEUP

Chris Thile of Nickel Creek to perform solo show at Levitt Pavilion Apr 15

BETHLEHEM, PA – Highlighted by a Grammy Award winner and also featuring sensory-friendly, comedy, spoken-word and reggae shows, ArtsQuest has added nine live events to its April and May schedule, all of which will be on sale to the public by Friday, March 5, at 10 a.m. All shows are being produced in accordance to CDC, state and city health and safety guidelines.

Multiple Grammy Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile will perform a solo show at the outdoor Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks presented by Coordinated Health, now a part of Lehigh Valley Health Network, on Apr. 15. A child prodigy, Thile first rose to fame as a member of Grammy Award-winning trio Nickel Creek, with whom he released four albums and sold over two million records. As a soloist, Thile has released several albums including his most recent, Thanks for Listening, and has won Grammys for collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan, in addition to his work with The Punch Brothers, specifically for their album All Ashore.

ArtsQuest is partnering with Accessible Festivals to present Inclusion Dining & Jams – featuring singer/songwriter Ryan Montbleau – in The Musikfest Café presented by Yuengling on Apr. 11. This all-ages/family-friendly show will feature a live American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter along with numerous additional sensory, visual and communication supports alongside of Montbleau, who has collaborated with Martin Sexton, Trombone Shorty and Galactic, among others. Funding for this show has been made possible in part by the ArtsQuest Foundation.

“We are so excited to be working with ArtsQuest to present a truly accessible experience that will incorporate music, art, play and food in a warm and welcoming environment,” said Leah Barron, the co-founder of Accessible Festivals. “We feel so lucky to be featuring Ryan Montbleau as the artist, as his positive and inspiring music is so well aligned with our inclusion-friendly programming.”

The Found Footage Festival also returns to The ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks on May 15 as part of this slate, though outdoors on the Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks for the first time. Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher, who have written for The Onion and The Colbert Report, have made a career out of finding obscure VHS cassettes and producing live shows around their bizarre content. This ninth edition of their tour includes the 1988 Miss Junior America Wisconsin pageant, a mysterious tape labeled “bonion sergery” and home movies taken at a Canadian hose factory.

Tickets, which will become available to ArtsQuest members on Tuesday, March 2 at 10 a.m. and the public on Friday, March 5 at 10 a.m., are available at steelstacks.org.

Following all CDC, state and city health and safety guidelines, campus attendance is being limited to ensure proper social distancing and masks – covering both the nose and mouth – are required at all times, aside from when seated eating and drinking.

Ticketing details for each venue at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks are as follows:

• The Musikfest Café presented by Yuengling: ticket prices cover tables of up to 2, 3, 4 and 6 people (no single admission tickets available).

• The Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks presented by Coordinated Health, now part of Lehigh Valley Health Network: ticket prices cover socially-distanced lawn squares and bench spots that fit up to 4 people, in addition to reduced-price admission for tables on the Air Products Town Square for up to 4 people.

Williams Brew Stage performances continue featuring new artists and special events

BETHLEHEM, PA – Palette & Pour restaurant, located on the first floor of the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks, is presenting another sequence of live performances and delectable dishes every Friday and Saturday night of March. Beginning Friday, March 5, diners will experience live performances and special events all month.

The acoustic, Irish folk band, Fig for a Kiss will start the lineup on March 5 as part of SouthSide Arts District’s “Shamrock and Roll – Irish Music Walk.” The Jazz Improvisational Experience, an open jam, is back on March 12 and 26. Diners can jam with a group and house band, Joe Mixon, Brian Bortz and Vern Mobley. You don’t need to be a musician to participate — all instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome. The option to sign up and jam will be available right on the performance page by the option to reserve a table. There will be a limited number of slots available for each show. If you are planning to come before or hang out after your jam time, please note you will need to make a reservation.

The Williams Brew Stage, made possible by the generous donations of ArtsQuest Circle Donors, Dr. Mary Ellen Williams and Mr. John Brew, will welcome Acute Inflections for the first time on Saturday, March 13. Acute Inflections is New York’s sultry duo led by a former Broadway singer. They can often be found entertaining their clients (United Nations, Mercedes-Benz, etc.) at high-end events across the country. They have shared the stage with Jennifer Hudson, Keith Urban and other notable artists at some of these events. Their albums often top the jazz charts, and their shows are both fun and enchanting.

Other can’t-miss artists include the relatable Stefanie Johnson Duo with catchy hooks and love torn lyrics, jazz-cabaret style band Ginger and the Schnappes, improvisational funk rock group Mosey Beat and Graffiti Smile, a Philadelphia based indie rock band.

Free table reservations will become available here on Tuesday, Feb. 23 to ArtsQuest Members and Friday, Feb. 26 to the public. There is a $10 food and beverage minimum per person in each party.

Following all CDC, state and city health and safety guidelines, campus attendance is being limited to ensure proper social distancing and masks – covering both the nose and mouth – are required at all times, aside from when seated eating and drinking.

Slingshot Dakota: ArtsQuest Discovery Series

By Carly Commando & Tom Patterson of Slingshot Dakota & ArtsQuest Staff | Published 2/17/21

In this edition, get to know the musical tastes of Slingshot Dakota! The wife & husband duo of Carly Commando (vocals/keyboard) & Tom Patterson (drums/cool hair) live in the Lehigh Valley but tour the globe! Closer to home, they’ve played pretty much every stage ArtsQuest has to offer, including a gig opening for Grouplove at Musikfest in 2018!

“These days, I find myself driving my band van for work instead of touring the country,” says Commando. “The good news is that I get to spend my days surrounded by the voices of my favorite artists that I miss! I’ve been able to revisit albums & listen to them in a completely new way, and it brings me so much joy on the backroads.”

So join Slingy D (in spirit) in their van, and crank the awesome tunes they’ve hand selected below!

Now, Now (Carly’s Pick)

We were lucky to tour with Now, Now in 2011, and they’re one of my favorite bands to date. We got to see them perform songs off their record Threads before it came out in 2012, and because of those memories, that album is forever one of my favorites. Their last record Saved (2018) was in heavy rotation this summer, too. Their songwriting, musicianship, and production wins me over every time. You can hear the progression of this band with every album and Bradley Hale always comes up with the coolest electronic elements that make me super jealous.

Ratboys (Carly’s Pick)

Another band we’ve toured with that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with is Ratboys. If it isn’t obvious yet, I grow very attached to the artists we spend a lot of time with because I really get to analyze their process & we form such a special bond on the road together. Rayboys released Printer’s Devil right before the pandemic cancelled all of their tour plans. It’s always the best feeling when your friends record an album that captures the energy and sound of their live performance. This whole album is a gem but a standout song for me is “A Vision.”

Charli XCX (Carly’s Pick)

A HUGE record that got me through 2020 is Charli XCX’s how i’m feeling now. We haven’t toured together yet…but that would be the ultimate dream. Written during and about the pandemic, the album is urgent and relatable, emotional and hook-y. She is premiering a film Alone Together at this year’s virtual SXSW, which documents how she recorded this album during lockdown.

Bartees Strange (Tom’s Pick)

One of the best artists we’ve had the pleasure of sharing a stage with recently is Bartees Strange. He released one of my top 10 albums of 2020 – Live Forever. Not only a great record, but amazing live! Check out the video for the song “Mustang”!

Bartees Strange (Tom’s Pick)

A local band that I absolutely love is Service Dog. A simple description is folk/indie rock, but they are so much more. Every aspect of the band is pure, honest beauty, and they keep getting better and better.

Listen to Slingshot Dakota’s Music!

We don’t have anything new to plug, but technically since we didn’t get to finish our tour cycle on what was *then* our new record, you should check out our album Heavy Banding.
