Staff Picks: 91st Academy Awards Predictions

oscarpicks_web

It has surely been a strange awards season in movie-land, but the staff and committee members behind the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas are here to help you win your office pool or at least make a little sense of what will go down at the Oscars on Sunday night!

Speaking of the 2019 Academy Awards®, you can join us for the live telecast at the Red Carpet Party in the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas.

Our picks this year are based on ballots submitted by: Ryan Hill, Programming Director; Dana Baker, Cinema Specialist; Anthony DeSanctis, Cinema and Comedy Coordinator; Rickey Negron, Cinema and Comedy Assistant; Lauren Tocci, Cinema Committee & First Saturday Horror Co-Curator; Bob Kilker, Cinema Committee & host of our Tuesday Talkbacks; Paul McEwan, Cinema Committee & Director of Muhlenberg College’s Film Studies Program; Catherine Ford, Cinema Committee; Jason Paulus*, Cinema Committee; and Jennifer Suwak & Steve Abruzzese (who made their choices together), Cinema Committee and GLVFF-award winning filmmakers.

*Jason has won first place in the Oscar Ballot Challenge at the past TWO Red Carpet Parties, meaning 1) he hasn’t paid for a ticket to the FBAC in two years and 2) you should probably listen to his picks more than anyone else’s here (they’re listed at the bottom of the post).

BEST PICTURE

oscars-4
Will win: Roma (75% of the group votes)
Should win: The Favourite (40%)

Only BlacKkKlansman (Ryan) and Green Book (Bob) were picked as non-Roma ‘will wins’ by the group, as Roma has won 20 similar awards so far this season while Green Book has 6. Meaning Ryan’s pick – which has 0 of these wins – is quite risky.

Anthony: Roma is simply breathtaking and absorbing. It’s a film we’ll talk about for years.

Lauren: This is Spike Lee’s year with BlacKkKlansman. Remove the “long overdue” narrative. This is just a great film; it balances quieter moments with brilliant speed and camera movements when the punch is needed.

Ryan: The Acadamy will reward Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) over and over again on Sunday night, but they won’t give Netflix the opportunity to say that they made a Best Picture winner. So BlacKkKlansman is my WILL win (and upset pick of the night) because I believe a lot of new Academy voters want to reward Spike Lee after years of the old ones ignoring him.

BEST DIRECTOR

oscars-5
Will win: Alfonso Cuarón, Roma (80%)
Should win: Tie: Cuarón & Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman (40% each)

Adam McKay (Vice) and Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War) did not receive any votes from the group, many of which believe this category should have included Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born), Paul Schrader (First Reformed), and/or Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here) instead. Cuarón has racked up 32 similar wins this season, with the next in line having only 3 (Lee).

Rickey: Roma is a lesson in delicate craftsmanship. We could learn a lot from Cuarón’s distinctive directorial style and thoughtful execution.

Catherine: I see BlacKkKlansman as one of Lee’s best films.

Bob: Yorgos Lanthimos deserves the win for The Favourite, a surreal, hilarious, yet emotionally resonant film.

BEST LEAD ACTRESS

oscars-6
Will win: Glenn Close, The Wife (88%)
Should win: Close (30%)

Only Jen & Steve see Lady Gaga as a ‘will win’ and no one has Olivia Colman (The Favourite) in that category despite 19 similar wins so far this season; the next in that line is Toni Collette (Hereditary) with 11, but she wasn’t even nominated. All of the nominees received ‘should win’ votes from the group.

Lauren: Close’s performance exists in its polarities, a storm of restrained feelings, a master class in the balance between control and unbridled resentment. She definitely deserves the top honors. But Olivia Colman has to balance between two stunning performances and representing a queen seemingly powerless, grieving, indulgent, and insecure. I think she has many performances like this within her, but this one is special.

Paul: Much has been written about how Yalitza Aparicio’s (Roma) character doesn’t have enough a voice, but her performance says what it needs to.

BEST LEAD ACTOR

oscars-3
Will win: Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody (86%)
Should win: Christian Bale, Vice (45%)

Very few in the group can understand how Ethan Hawke (First Reformed) could have been left off this list; he has 28 similar wins this season, while Malek and Bale only have 6 each. Only Lauren believes that Bale will win on Sunday and just 25% of the group thinks Malek should win, making for the biggest difference between ‘will win’ and ‘should win’ on these ballots.

Paul: Bale’s portrayal of a character at all those ages is really hard. It was the only thing Orson Welles couldn’t do convincingly.

Bob: Bale disappeared into the role of Dick Cheney, but I think Malek will be rewarded in part because of our culture’s much greater affection for Freddie Mercury.

Anthony: Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) gave the performance of the year, in my opinion.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

oscars-2
Will win: Mahershala Ali, Green Book (86%)
Should win: Ali (45%)

Here’s another category wherein the nominee with the most similar wins (Richard E. Grant – 18 for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me) wasn’t picked by anyone in the group as a ‘will-win’ (though he received 30% of the ‘should win’ vote), which has a lot to do with the fact that Ali’s been taking the major wins so far and has 12 total. While there’s some pull for the criminally underrated Sam Elliot (A Star is Born) to get the nod, his lack of use in the film is a major strike against.

Rickey: Ali’s Green Book role has a lot more substance than his role in Moonlight and he’s been on a winning streak ever since. Faultless performance in every way, but a shoutout to Sam Elliot because he’s one of the strongest actors, period, and has yet to be rightfully recognized.

Lauren: Grant’s turn as a trickster, both heartbreaking and frustrating, demonstrates the power of a smile to fool an audience in to the playfulness of the moment, and a subtle turn in the eyes that reveals the truth of this character, one deeply rooted in pain.

Ryan: If the Oscars had a Best Chemistry award, Grant and Melissa McCarthy would win in a landslide.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

oscars-1
Will win: Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk (71%)
Should win: King (40%)

King is the front-runner here with 30 similar wins while Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone (both from The Favourite) have 6 and 3, respectively. Stone received 30% of the ‘should win’ votes as many believe hers to be the best performance in The Favourite, but her previous win in the Lead Actress category will likely have voters checking off other names. Jen & Steve have Amy Adams (Vice) as a ‘will win’ despite her having only 1 similar win under her belt.

Bob: If Beale Street Could Talk hasn’t received the awards-season attention it deserves, but Regina King’s work in the film has rightfully been honored for her warm, heartbreaking performance.

Lauren: Rachel Weisz’s performance is wry, stunning, and imbues each scene with a dripping snark and control that makes this film special.

Anthony: I found Stone’s villainous turn to be fascinating and cruel. She played against type and showed she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Jason Paulus’s WILL WIN picks:

Picture: Roma
Director: Cuarón
Actor: Malek
Actress: Close
Supporting Actress: King
Supporting Actor: Ali

We Three’s Four America’s Got Talent Performances

wethree_web
By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

Season 13 of America’s Got Talent was one of the best crops of acts the successful show has seen. With acrobats, magicians, dance groups, individual singers and other eclectic acts, it’s usually difficult for an original band to break through…unless you’re as talented as Joshua, Bethany and Manny of We Three.

Before We Three brings their Lifeline Tour to the Musikfest Cafe presented by Yuengling on March 10, let’s take a look at the family band’s journey to winning America’s hearts through their original songs…

Auditions – “Heaven’s Not Too Far Away”

The nation’s introduction to We Three on America’s Got Talent was an emotional one. The sibling trio’s audition song was an incredible tribute to their late mother.

Judge Cuts – “Lifeline”

We Three wasn’t just a one-hit TV show wonder. They upped the emotional ante with their second song “Lifeline” in the Judge Cuts round.

Quarterfinals – “So They Say”

Another performance, another song that hits you right in the feels. “So They Say” helped the group advance in the competition once again.

Semifinals – “Make Up”

In the semifinals, We Three broke out the trumpet and the upbeat “Make Up” that had us dancing in our living rooms.

Elimination Interview

We Three just missed out on making the AGT finals, but they kept a positive attitude after elimination. They gained countless fans and thought the experience was a dream come true. They’re a humble and talented group that we can’t wait to see live!

Sharks, Brooklyn & Funny: An Interview with Tracy Morgan

tracyog_web
By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

Tracy Morgan is one of the most respected comedians in his field. Starring for seven seasons each on NBC’s 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live. Even after two career-defining jobs, Morgan hasn’t faded from the spotlight. He recently earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is getting ready for a second season of his sitcom The Last O.G., and will star on the big screen in the movie What Men Want. Oh, and his stand-up tour comes to the Musikfest Cafe pres. by Yuengling for two shows on Saturday, February 23!

Before Tracy Morgan returns to Bethlehem, we spoke to the hilarious, successful and team-oriented comedian on the phone from his New Jersey home…

ArtsQuest: Hey Tracy! We’re looking forward to having you back in Bethlehem on February 23!

Tracy Morgan: I love that room. It was one of the last rooms I did with Jimmy Mack. I remember it like it was yesterday.

AQ: Oh, wow. So it will mean more for you this time around.

TM: Yeah, it means I’ll get to be with him. That was my brother, my comrade, my O.G.

AQ: Before we get into your performance here, we’ve never been able to ask this to someone before: how are your sharks doing?

TM: Oh they’re doing great, man. I was just up there with ‘em in their tank and they’re doing great.

AQ: How big are they now?

TM: I think they’re three feet or four feet. They’re babies, they’re puppies. They’re growing, I just fed them.

AQ: You’re like a sea daddy.

TM: Yeah, I am a sea daddy. I take after my great-great grandfather Jacques Cousteau.

AQ: Your new film What Men Want opens on Friday, February 8th. What did you enjoy most about doing this movie?

TM: It was the people I worked with. Working with (director) Adam Shankman was awesome. It was like family, it was fun. It was a whole bunch of fun filming. I got to work with some of my favorites and Taraji (P. Henson) is awesome. Very funny and high-energy. We had a good time.

AQ: So you feed off of each other on set?

TM: Absolutely, absolutely. All day, every day.

AQ: We love seeing you in The Last O.G. on TBS. Season 2 premieres on April 2nd. What do you enjoy most about being a leading man?

TM: I most enjoy leading my cast, my crew, my production the right way. That’s what I love doing. I’m happy for everyone involved. I’m not just happy for me. I don’t consider myself a leading man. I consider myself part of the cast and the production. Team man. And we’re doing a great job playing with each other.

AQ: What can we expect from the new season?

TM: Aw man, some more blasts from season one but better! We’re gonna visit a lot of places with the characters.

AQ: You, Jimmy Fallon, Horatio Sanz and Chris Kattan have done multiple incarnations of “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” on Saturday Night Live. What are you thinking about as the character in that sketch?

TM: I’m the dancer from that perspective. I’m just the dancer but I don’t really know how to dance. I keep the groove and I keep the beat.

AQ: Is there any dancer you’re trying to emulate in that?

TM: No! What dancers dance like that, man. C’mon, please.

AQ: The one and only!

TM: But when I’m not dancing I’m working in a warehouse somewhere. That character leads a very boring life.

AQ: Many folks know your career on TV and the movie screen, but what do you love most about getting on the road to do stand-up?

TM: All three are different muscles: TV, movies and stand-up. It’s just me on stage with my mic and my audience. You know stand-up is different than doing acting and TV, you know. It’s more personable for me.

AQ: You like that connection you get with the audience that you don’t get in front of a camera.

TM: Of course. It’s live and it’s right there in front of you.

AQ: What can fans expect from your two stand-up shows here in the Musikfest Café pres. by Yuengling on February 23?

TM: Funny. Funny. Funny. It’s funny.

AQ: It’s almost Valentine’s Day. With your character from The Last O.G. being from Brooklyn, what would be the perfect Brooklyn date for the holiday?

TM: Movie and a dinner. Keep it basic.

AQ: Any places in Brooklyn you recommend?

TM: No. I would take her into the city. On a special occasion take her into the city. Take her to Junior’s in Manhattan.

AQ: Great advice! We appreciate you taking the time to talk.

TM: Thank you!

Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School Named Souper Bowl X Champions

bavts-souper-bowl-champs-by-emily-cummins

BETHLEHEM, PA¬¬–Twenty teams cooked up a fierce competition at the 10th annual Souper Bowl, the culinary contest held at the ArtsQuest Center’s Musikfest Café in Bethlehem on Jan. 26. When the soups cooled, the Culinary Arts students from the Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School were declared Souper Bowl Champions with their delicious take on Pumpkin Bisque with Smoked Gouda. The competition raised $19,000 for the Arts Education Fund for ArtsQuest, the nonprofit that presents Musikfest, Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem and programs at the Banana Factory arts center and SteelStacks.

First runner-up for Souper Bowl Champion was Almost Home Catering for Cream of Crab Soup, while Joe’s Tavern took second runner-up for a Ham, String Bean and Potato Chowder.

The Souper Bowl Judging panel also named several category winners:

Best Cream-Based – Southside 313 Bar & Grille for Bloody Mary Bisque
Best Ethnic – Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School Culinary Arts Students for Puerto Rican Sancocho
Best Meat-Based – ArtsQuest Center Culinary Team by Levy for Hunter’s Stew
Beast Seafood-Based – Johnny’s Bagels & Deli for Lobster Bisque
Best Vegetarian – Steel Club for “Bento Box” Soup
Most Original – Iron Lakes Country Club for Pear Ginger Soup

“This year’s Souper Bowl was special for many reasons. Not only did we reach a decade of celebrating the culinary arts, we’ve now raised nearly $140,000 over the past 10 years to support ArtsQuest’s arts education programming,” says Michelle Veresink Richmond, ArtsQuest Sr. Manager of Membership & Advancement Operations and coordinator for the Souper Bowl. “We’re thrilled that BAVTS Culinary Arts students were the champions this year, since the Souper Bowl is an event that’s designed to support arts education opportunities in our region.

“We’re also very fortunate to have tremendous support from the region’s restaurants and culinary community, who donate time and talents to make this event an annual success. Thank you to everyone who came together for this milestone year!”

Judges for Souper Bowl X were Michael Faccinetto of the ArtsQuest Circle, Alexandra Hogan from WFMZ-TV 69 News, Jennifer Sheehan from The Morning Call and George Wacker of Lehigh Valley with Love Media, LLC.

Special thanks to MacIntosh Services, 100.7 WLEV, Franklin Hill Vineyards and Social Still, which supported this year’s contest. Souper Bowl XI is set for Jan. 25, 2020. Tickets for the event will go on sale later this year
