History of Bethlehem Steel and SteelStacks

  • When guests visit the SteelStacks campus, the first thing they usually notice are the towering 'stacks' after which the campus is named. What many people may not realize is that these iconic structures are actually a series of five blast furnaces that were used in the iron making process at Bethlehem Steel for decades. What is SteelStacks?

SteelStacks is a ten-acre campus dedicated to arts, culture, family events, community celebrations, education and fun. Once the home plant of Bethlehem Steel, the second largest steel manufacturer in the nation, the site has been reborn through music and art, offering more than 1,000 concerts and eight different festivals annually.

ArtsQuest Center

ArtsQuest Center at Steelstacks

This contemporary performing arts center offers dynamic music, comedy, cabaret, dance and other performances year-round. The ArtsQuest Center's Musikfest Cafe presented by Yuengling is an intimate concert venue featuring the best in rock, blues, jazz, folk and more, along with full dinner service for most shows. In addition, the performing arts center is home to the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas, showcasing the best in independent, documentary and foreign films, along with weekly comedy shows!

Levitt Pavilion Steelstacks

Levitt Pavilion Steelstacks

Dramatically located in front of the Blast Furnaces in the middle of the campus, the ultra modern music pavilion greets guests as they arrive on the campus on Founders Way. The Levitt, with a grass lawn for public seating, hosts over 50 live, free family friendly concerts from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, in addition to being "AmericaPlatz" for Bethlehem's annual Musikfest, where dozens of free concerts are offered during the 10 days of the largest free music festival in the United States.

Looking for a different type of entertainment experience? SteelStacks hosts a diverse array of festivals and special events throughout the year. Each August the campus is home to Musikfest, the nation's largest free festival, with more than 500 performances on 15 stages. In addition, SteelStacks also hosts an authentic Oktoberfest presented by Yuengling each October - drop by and you'll enjoy live music, delicious German food, barrel rolling competitions, dachshund races and much more.

The campus also includes Air Products Town Square, PNC Plaza, the Bethlehem Visitor Center, and PBS39.
